A very attractive coffee-table book featuring large-formt illustrations of HTML and CSS that were up-to-date when the book was written in 2011。 If you're looking for useful intruction, you'll get far, far more from MDN's free online materials。 A very attractive coffee-table book featuring large-formt illustrations of HTML and CSS that were up-to-date when the book was written in 2011。 If you're looking for useful intruction, you'll get far, far more from MDN's free online materials。 。。。more

Good starting point, I have leearned alot about CSS and what it is for, and it breaks down the history of HTML 4, XHTML and HTML 5 which is always good for me to understand the big picture。 Now I got the overview picture of evrything time to dive in。

Outdated, but still a lot of good knowledge here。 I didn't read every chapter, but a majority of this book (for my Codecademy course)。 Outdated, but still a lot of good knowledge here。 I didn't read every chapter, but a majority of this book (for my Codecademy course)。 。。。more

Visually impressive, yes, perhaps the best way to capture attention of a beginner web programmer / designer。 I am giving it 3 stars because here on Goodreads that somehow means "I liked it" which I did。 Visually impressive, yes, perhaps the best way to capture attention of a beginner web programmer / designer。 I am giving it 3 stars because here on Goodreads that somehow means "I liked it" which I did。 。。。more

Definitely dated since HTML5 was just coming out, but it was still a nice review

I am new to the coding world so I am not the right person to judge this book。 From my newbie point of view, it has been nice to take a look at but not precisely useful for me。 It is often mentioned as the BEST book for new coding learners。 It is a bit unsettling to not be able to see why。 I am halfway with this book, css section, so I still hold hopes of seeing why it is so amazing for others。

A great guide for how to design a website。Illustrations and codes are represented in a great way with a summary at the end of each chapter。I highly recommend this book for all beginners who would like to develop their skills and as a reference for who is developing for the first times。

Clear and easily understandable。 Jon Duckett made it easy to understand the basics of HTML & CSS。

Probably read this 10 years ago。 Clearing my bookshelf of old stuff。 Beautiful book, really makes learning HTML and CSS enjoyable。 It makes sense to learn HTML and CSS from a book with great design since you should be in that mindset if you’re a software engineer who builds Web interfaces。 Not sure if there’s a new edition but can’t beat it if you’re a beginner/intermediate。

Gopaal Singgla

Overall great book for beginners。 However, there are mistakes in the illustrations where the HTML source code and the corresponding RESULT image showed do not match。 This could be confusing for completely novice readers, whereas, for anyone already little or more experienced with HTML that could in fact serve as fact-checks!

I started learning HTML and CSS from this book at the beginning, and in fact, it is a good book, and the explanation in it is simple and tidy, but I found the best and fastest learning from the tutorials videos on YouTube, however, the book was good in giving me a good idea before watching videos。

Great initiation to the world of HTML/CSS。

An introduction to HTML and CSS that can get you making decent looking web sites。 The content is presented in a very stylish way, which is helpful because it's geared towards front-end design。 The main drawback is that it is outdated at this point; HTML5 was just released when this came out。 Not a large drawback, though, because a lot still carries over and knowing historical approaches isn't bad。 An introduction to HTML and CSS that can get you making decent looking web sites。 The content is presented in a very stylish way, which is helpful because it's geared towards front-end design。 The main drawback is that it is outdated at this point; HTML5 was just released when this came out。 Not a large drawback, though, because a lot still carries over and knowing historical approaches isn't bad。 。。。more

I wish I had this when I was starting out。 My first book about web design was CSS for Dummies, and it opened my eyes to possibilities。 After a few years of not touching any HTML or CSS directly, this has been a wonderful refresher to get making things again。 My understanding of web design started through a CSS lens。 In retrospect, beginning to learn web design by understanding the power and capabilities of the structure first—through HTML—would have been a much better first step。Highly recommend I wish I had this when I was starting out。 My first book about web design was CSS for Dummies, and it opened my eyes to possibilities。 After a few years of not touching any HTML or CSS directly, this has been a wonderful refresher to get making things again。 My understanding of web design started through a CSS lens。 In retrospect, beginning to learn web design by understanding the power and capabilities of the structure first—through HTML—would have been a much better first step。Highly recommend to anyone who thinks they can't make a website, or curious how easy it is。 This is a step by step explanation for any sort of "first steps into the web" and a wonderful refresher on the basics for anyone looking to freshen' up。 。。。more

This is an excellent intro to HTML and CSS。 I love how it starts by answering the question "How does the internet work?" It's a bit outdated at this point (e。g。 Flash), but it's gorgeous to read, a lot still applies, and there's something to learn about what didn't stick。 I'd recommend to any aspiring web developers, and wish I had read earlier。 This is an excellent intro to HTML and CSS。 I love how it starts by answering the question "How does the internet work?" Very good read, although some things are outdated now and with it being older there's no details on responsive design but worth a read regardless。 Very good read, although some things are outdated now and with it being older there's no details on responsive design but worth a read regardless。 。。。more

Overall structure for learning is logical and will influence my lectures, but too much of the content feels outdated or too vague at this point to be helpful as a direct student resource。

Amazing book and great layout/design, it makes it much more pleasant to read。 Unfortunately, it's quite outdated, specially on the CSS end。 Flex-boxes and CSS grid is quite essential nowadays。 And not mentioning Web Components (though it's JS) is quite the bummer。 It would really help somebody who's starting to make his/her code much cleaner。 Amazing book and great layout/design, it makes it much more pleasant to read。 Unfortunately, it's quite outdated, specially on the CSS end。 Flex-boxes and CSS grid is quite essential nowadays。 And not mentioning Web Components (though it's JS) is quite the bummer。 It would really help somebody who's starting to make his/her code much cleaner。 。。。more

This is a great book to learn the bare basics of frontend dev。 Take note - While the information presented is considered the bare basics, it would not be an easy read for someone without knowledge of computers, the web and programming。 For someone with some form of background in computing, and looking to explore the frontend dev side of things, this book is a good entry level read that can be completed easily in a few days。

An amazing and well written book on building responsive websites from scratch。 Nice pictures that display how your HTML & CSS code will look if you follow the instructions in the book and you should, because Jon is an awesome teacher。

As I am attempting to become a web developer and learn more about the craft, I have been researching all sorts of resources and soaking up information like a sponge。 This book started promising。 I loved the amount of explanation in this book。 It does a great job of explaining concepts that I struggled to understand from following other resources。 I love the pictures in it and just the care the author took to ensure these concepts were understood by the reader。 The book can get repetitive though As I am attempting to become a web developer and learn more about the craft, I have been researching all sorts of resources and soaking up information like a sponge。 This book started promising。 I loved the amount of explanation in this book。 It does a great job of explaining concepts that I struggled to understand from following other resources。 I love the pictures in it and just the care the author took to ensure these concepts were understood by the reader。 The book can get repetitive though as the other repeats concepts and ideas a number of times as the book continues。 This is definitely a textbook and it reads like one。 Also, at no fault of this book, the author, and the publishers, there are some concepts that are already outdated or don’t need to be discussed in a book of this nature。 But, that’s the way of technology。 This is a solid way to start learning the basics of coding though。 It’s a great supplement to other materials。 However, I wouldn’t use this as my main resource to learn。 。。。more

A great book for absolute beginners。 This book has great illustrations and the explanations are easy to understand。 I used this book alongside the MDN documentation but I wouldn't call it a reference book。 However, a new edition would be necessary in order to incorporate HTML5/CSS3, flexbox and grid systems。 Unfortunately, there are no practice exercise but I rewrote the examples given and adapted it to small projects in order to learn。 A great book for absolute beginners。 This book has great illustrations and the explanations are easy to understand。 I used this book alongside the MDN documentation but I wouldn't call it a reference book。 However, a new edition would be necessary in order to incorporate HTML5/CSS3, flexbox and grid systems。 Unfortunately, there are no practice exercise but I rewrote the examples given and adapted it to small projects in order to learn。 。。。more
